Creating and closing a case
The only required field, and why cases cannot be deleted.
A case needs a name. Everything else — case number, court, engagement type, client — can be filled in later or left out.
Use case numbers and party names only. Do not put protected health information in a case name; it appears on invoices and in exports.
CLOSING, NOT DELETING
There is no delete. Closing a case is a status change, and the database refuses deletion outright. Billable history is a record: an invoice you sent references work on that case, and letting the case vanish would leave that invoice pointing at nothing.
A closed case stays fully workable. You can still log time against it, add expenses and generate invoices — which matters, because work on a matter often continues after you consider it closed. The one exception is the dashboard quick-entry picker, which leaves closed cases out to keep the list short.
